About the event
In modern Danza Azteca/Mexika traditions and indigenous Mexican coming-of-age rituals,
"Xilonen" is a name given to young women during an important multi-day ceremony.
It marks a significant transition in a young woman's life—from childhood to womanhood.
Participants perform traditional dances, learn skills, and honor the goddess of tender corn.
Xilonen is the youthful Aztec/Mexika goddess of new/young maize (corn), fertility, and renewal. She embodies agricultural abundance and the transition from the spring planting season to the summer harvest. Her name literally translates to "hairy one," which references the likeness of corn silk to hair. It is also the origin of the word elote (fresh, tender ear of corn).
In July, the Aztecs/Mexikas held a spectacular festival in her honor, where a young girl would impersonate the goddess in ritual dances to ensure an abundant harvest.
